Preparation for a dating ultrasound

Pregnancy ultrasounds are performed mainly using transabdominal ultrasound (scan through the maternal abdomen). We usually get better images during transabdominal ultrasound if the bladder is partially filled, so to help your examination we ask you to drink water prior to your assessment. Most dating scans are done with a trans-abdominal transducer and a fullish bladder. If the pregnancy is very early the gestation sac and fetus will not be big enough to see, so the transvaginal approach will give better pictures. For most mums-to-be, the first scan will be a dating scan at between 10 weeks and 13 weeks plus six days of pregnancy. However, the timing of your first scan will also depend on how your pregnancy is going, and where you live.

Ask your GP if you want to have one anyway for extra reassurance, as she may be able to refer you.Sometimes a transvaginal ultrasound (internal scan through the vagina) is also needed, especially in the first trimester. We may need a closer look at your baby, the position of the placenta, or the length of the cervix.Sometimes a trans-vaginal examination shows that your pregnancy is less advanced than expected. The earlier the ultrasound is done, the more accurate it is at estimating the baby's due date.
