Mandating vaccine is good
“We know too well that the level of [immunization] protection that we have now established in our children and our communities is a fragile one that depends on what we refer to as community or ‘herd’ immunity. From the standpoint of effectiveness, modern childhood vaccines are approximately 90 to 95 percent effective.
“However, should the level of community protection drop to the point where the viruses and bacteria travel unimpeded from person—to-person, from school-to-school, and from community-to-community, we instantly return to a past era when epidemics were an accepted part of life.” America experienced such an outbreak in 1989-91 with the resurgence of measles.
These days, there are usually no reported cases in a year. For the first five years of the 1940s, there were a million cases of whooping cough.
When a vaccine was introduced at the end of that decade, the number of cases fell to 15,000 by 1960 — and 1,700 by 1980.
You know about the importance of car seats, baby gates and other ways to keep them safe.
But, did you know that one of the best ways to protect your children is to make sure they have all of their vaccinations? Because of advances in medical science, your child can be protected against more diseases than ever before.
